At a general level, all centrifugal fans operate in a similar manner: they direct air from the center of their circular impeller towards the outer edge. This stands in contrast to axial fans, like the ones found in desktop appliances, which move air parallel to the axis on which the impeller is mounted.

Centrifugal fans leverage centrifugal force to expel the air at a 90-degree angle to the impeller’s axis. As the air passes through the powered fan, the impeller blades apply force, propelling it outwards and away from the center of the fan. The shape of the housing guides the airflow, increasing its speed and pressure before it exits the fan at the discharge point.
